Maybe the problem is that so many aspiring politicians treat what is intended to be an apolitical service position as the first rung on the political ladder.
My ideal candidate would make two public commitments: 1) zero party affiliation, and 2) reverting to the prior boundary review policy. I’ll state the obvious: The job of school board member should not be an audition for higher office. That brings politics into the school system. Consider your friends and neighbors. I am sure that you can identify a handful of people who would be great at the SB job but who have no stomach for doing “what it takes” to participate in politics. Look at what Kyle McDaniel did to get endorsed by the FCDC and look what a winner he turned out to be. The other side is no better. Who wants to be part of that mess. The solution is simple. Run as “Unendorsed. Student Focused”. Put it on the signs. Show me that your background experience qualifies you for the job and that your goal is not simply seeking higher office. This area is loaded with highly skilled parents of current/former/future FCPS students who could run circles around our current school board when it comes to so many areas of basic competency. Heck, I bet some of you are or know a current or former PTA parent that is more committed to the students, more professionally competent, and more knowledgeable of the workings and needs in your local schools than most of our current SB members. What separates the people you know from the clown show is that they don’t want to be a politician. So don’t be one. Run for the job without party endorsement. If you are in my district or run as at-large, and you show me that you are qualified and apolitical, I will vote for you. We can fix this because there are so many things that we can agree upon that do not require the two major parties to be involved. We just need people to step up and run. Unendorsed. Student Focused. |
Why can’t the “Unendorsed. Student Focused” platform grow on its own? We have two years to prepare: Step 1: Start watching SB meetings and learn what the issues are/what the job requires. Here is a tip: play the YouTube recording of the SB meeting during your commute/as you go for a jog/do yard work. That will get you/your community group prepped on the issues and the scope of the job. Step 2: Create community awareness of the two main issues (no political affiliation and ending 5-year boundary review cycles) and the slogan:”Unendorsed. Student Focused.” You have two years. It can be done. Reach all the corners of your district, include all age groups in your voting community. Here is the key: for this one position SB, DO NOT VOTE A PARTY TICKET. That is how we get politics out of the schools. We can do this. |
One question for you: who put policy 8130.8 in place?
If you think that this “look this is fine, we aren’t doing anything” will save your uber-political candidates in 2027, you are mistaken. If the current board is not replaced in 2027, we are back in this 2-year fight with our own school system in 2029. |
This is not about Openschools or COVID or TJ. It is about ending the boundary review and taking politics out of the school board. |
I am going to lock this thread because all of the posts above are from the same poster.
