Basketball at TJ

Anonymous
My kid decided to apply to TJ last summer, and he got in. We don’t know much about the school, except that it’s more academically challenging and focused on STEM compared to the base school. He’s interested in playing basketball in high school, but he’s never played on a team before. Does he have to be really good to be able to join the team there?

You can try out. But basketball rosters are short so getting on the team is not open admissions. But there are definitely less experienced players on the team, especially if you're tall and athletic

basketball is six days a week during winter season. If student has academics taken care of, they can afford to participate past sophomore. Most quit before junior year, hence there is just one team for both junior and senior years.

You mean varsity?

A lot of those kids aren't quitting between sophomore and junior year, they're not making the cut. It can be a blessing in disguise but they don't have trouble filling the rooster. A few kids are quitting for academic reasons but one good thing sports teachers is time management and executive function.
