Working/interning for senators etc

If your DC can intern for your senator or congressman does it increase their chances of getting into a more selective school? Is this a sure thing to get into an Ivy especially if you have high stats?

Nothing is a sure thing.

Like any activity, it increases chances to the extent that it shows leadership and the student can explain what they learned.

This. There's no magic bullet for college admissions but it's very unlikely to hurt. I have friends who worked in senate offices and it's an interesting environment to work in.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of high schoolers who intern in senate offices every year. No, they do not all go on to ivy league schools. Good lord. If your child has a chance to do it, they should do it to understand the workings of the federal government, to get a broader and deeper window into America, and to remove themself a bit from the bubble of their normal world. If they do it to get into a better school, they should stay home.

No. lots do it at our dmv private and none recently have gotten in, though they were not in the right rigor group and likely did not have stats. The ivy kids who have been unhooked the past 4 cycles (22-25) have had various ECs, one extensive volunteering with a local nonprofit one with science research, one with regional/state academic honors, one national debater. some had high school sports and all had orchestra or chorus/dance or theater often with state band awards or the like. All the unhooked ones have been in the hardest courses and at or near the top of class (school announces top10% cum laude society). Top rigor and near the top of the class is the most common denominator, next is some sort of art, next is at least one other in depth EC but it can be many different things. This is for unhooked. Half the ivy kids are hooked: secret service kid, legacy, URM with questbrigde, recruited athlete: these kids do not have to have top rigor and the athletes can be quite average as in 1250 SAT and 3.7 uw GPA for top sports, 1450/3.8 for XC, crew. Unhookeds are all 1530+/4.0UW
