Belize, Mexico or ?

Anonymous
I am trying to plan a trip for the week after Christmas and am finding that most things in the Caribbean are booked and extremely expensive. We like luxe resorts and those are nearly $4,000 per night for that week! I'm considering Belize and Mexico (Mayakoba or elsewhere). Looking for input on either at that time of year for a family with two teens/tweens. Looking for a beach and some adventure (snorkeling, rain forest, fishing, etc.). Also open to other locales that people have enjoyed.

Mexico is really big. Where exactly are you considering?

Specifically looking at Myakobo (Banyan Tree or Fairmont) or Xcaret though I think that's probably too big and crazy for us.

$4000 per night!! That is insane!

I pay $30 for a day pass at a nice resort just a short 20 min boat ride from Cartagena, Colombia. Not sure the cost of rooms, but likely in the neighborhood of $250/night.

That’s like a holiday inn. Op wants luxe.

Even the JW Cancun which is probably in the $400 range at spring break is almost $1000 a night the week between Christmas and new year's. It's probably the most expenosve week of the year.

Please show us a resort that's at least 4 star that is $250 a night. I'm paying $600 a night in Rehoboth for a 3 star!

Grand Velas Mayan Riviera has two queens for $2300 a night.

Maybe Alaia Belize. They have two bedroom suites for $11k for the week.

That is an awfully expensive week.
We’ve done cruises that week (still double price but not as bad as resorts).
Another year we went to si comp no but I know there were already booked by April and I only got that because they had a cancellation.

I think you’re gojng to have to compromise on your view of luxury resort.

I might look at Aruba also. There is a lot of supply there so prices might not be as high.

Maybe also try Panama—I just did a very quick TripAdvisor search and it loooks like there is some availability in what look to be nice hotels for under $1K per night.

+1 for Panama. The Sofitel in Panama City is nice and you could pair that with a beach resort.

Or Cartagena? There is also a Sofitel outside the city that is brand new.

Are Panama and Columbia safe? DH is even hesitant about travel to Mexico so these might be too risky for him.
