| Did it today and saved ourselves $200/mo. It is all so stupid and makes no sense but necessary hassle. |

I'd be interested in what folks are paying.
Mine's like $100 per month, which feels insane to me. I live in DC, but I have off street parking. |
You cannot easily compare to others with out all the details. Details: type of car (value of car matters a lot---age and type of car are essential to know) Coverage (100/300 or 250/500K or anything else, what are the deductibles, etc) Age of drivers, does each car in your household have a dedicated driver, or is one shared (IE, it is much cheaper to add a teen driver if they dont' have a dedicated car or if two teens are sharing one car) Zipcode/location (we have two homes, and one is in a city---we have the cars registered at the other address, because it's half the price (if not more off) to do it that way. Is car in a garage or in your driveway or on the street Until you align those details you simply cannot compare. however, know you can shop around, but many will give you a lower price this year then raise it next year. So you have to do this yearly, and often have to do it with your homeowners as well to bundle everything, and your umbrella. |

47, live in DC, no claims ever, 1-year old car with small loan left, private parking, drive 4k mile max a year.
I can't get the small Japanese SUV under $2000 a year with anyone. The one time I shopped around, but they just wasted my time and raised the rates 6 months later. |
Yeah, I know you're right. I did a few online calculators a couple of years ago, and since I have a Kia, some wouldn't cover me at all. I have car and homeowners bundled with USAA. But with no claims, no teen drivers, a low-value car with low use and low mileage (I live in the city-- owning something fancy just to get it dinged up would be a nonstop annoyance) $100 a month seems like a lot. I'm behind the times. |
Yeah, $1200 for a year is awesome. But yes, you live in a city, and will get dinged for that. I live in a city, we have a garage spot at our condo, but that doesn't matter because they assume you drive in the city and might park it there as well when out and about. And fact is, it could be damaged/broken into easily. Personally, we carry the highest deductible allowed, because quite frankly, we wouldn't file a claim unless it was massive (as in an accident with others involved and there might be injuries---otherwise you just fix it yourself---file a $3K claim and you will find your rates increased for 3-5 years, and you might just end up paying more. Also, we figure, we want to save that "claim" for when it's massive event, if you file for a little thing, you might get dropped and be out of luck) Also, you really should consider ditching the Kia if you can, and replace it. Even if YOU have done the "upgrades" so it's not easy to steal, I'm gonna guess most thieves don't check that when they break into a car and attempt it. Hence why many will not insure a Kia anymore. Anything but a Kia/Hyundai, simply so that you don't overpay for insurance (oh and so you don't come back to a damaged or stolen vehicle as well). |
If that's just liability, it is insane. Is why so many people are just driving w/o it these days. It's a scam that needs to be reigned in. |
No, it's comprehensive. I think a $500 deductible? I don't pay a lot of attention, but it just renewed so I noticed the total. I was thinking it was more like $60 a month. |
Nah, I'm going to drive it til the wheels fall off-- or til it gets stolen. (Though I did get the patch so it'll probably just be a broken window and trashed ignition.) I paid cash for it several years ago, and every month I don't have a car payment, I'm beating the house. And in the meantime, I'll save up for the next one. |
$100 a month isn’t too bad for a comprehensive coverage. Can you find a better price. For sure, I don’t think you can find $60 these days. |
| Adding a new teen driver to our policy increased our premium by $1,600 for six months with Geico. I was shocked! I then shopped around and got a quote from Progressive with the teen on it that was essentially the same price as it was before we added her to the Geico policy. Crazy!! |
I cannot believe people are paying so little. I don’t even want to say how much we’re paying. We are a family of 4 in the suburbs with a teen driver and it’s a fortune. |
| My car insurance keeps getting more expensive every year but if I remove it from the bundle discount it negates any savings by switching insurance companies. I’d have to move the whole bundle to a different insurance company which is a lot of work. |

Does having a car loan affect the price of insurance? I know if affects what you're required to carry, but the actual price of the policy?
I've never had a car loan. I've been laid off, so the idea of losing my job and still having to scramble to make payments freaks me out. And if the insurance is more expensive in addition to the interest/ risk of a loan, I'll feel even more smug about my base model cheap wheels! |
| car loan has nothing to do with insurance rates. People would be surprised to know that it is your credit score and somewhat education that makes you more or less risky for insurance companies. |
