myrtle beach area in early August

Anonymous
due to family logistics, MIL has suggested meeting up here. Its obviously no one's fantasy vacation, but has anyone been and were there bad jellyfish in the ocean at that time?

They can be terrible. I go to Myrtle Beach every year because I'm a good DIL, but even I refuse to go in late July/early August anymore. I highly recommend that you stay at a place with a pool just in case the ocean is unswimmable.

Not that bad just avoid the ocean a few hours after high tide and swim in the pool instead.

OP-ugh. Thanks.

Peak mosquito season too

Why don’t you guys go somewhere else like Emerald isle?

I'd expect some jellyfish. I'd also expect it to be hotter than Hades.

We used to go every year around that time. It can vary a lot. Some years, fine; other years, lots more jellies. But not so bad you can’t swim (not like Chesapeake Bay in August bad).

We were looking at Myrtle Beach a few years back but cancelled because I'd read how bad the crime is. I had no idea until I started researching. I was looking forward to all the kitschy activities, but the oceanfront area south of 50th Avenue North is pretty crime-ridden with visitors advised to be vigilant and not walk alone, etc. That's just not something I need to deal with on vacation. There are Atlantic Ocean beaches where it's not necessary.

OP I’m sorry but this is a horrible time to go

Also crime there has ticketed up quite a bit.

We stopped there last August because we had a wedding near there. We hadn’t been in years . The whole area is just gross.

The embassy Suites just did a huge renovation a few years back and it’s basically crime city. Two rooms on our floor were robbed the nights we were there, The fancy Marriot property cars were broken into.

It’s a dump now,

I’m sorry, OP. This trip sounds like hell for a lot of reasons.

Yea. It’s gone the way of cruise ships and spirit airlines.

You can't do Hilton Head. Very few places would make myrtle beach more logistically convenient.

Be sure to reserve your Dukes of Hazard dinner theater tix early! They sell out fast!

Be sure to bring your big johnson energy.

Stay in North Myrtle Beach and be cautious like you would on any other vacation. I’ve been there and while it’s not on my list to go again, it has an appeal for some — beaches, restaurants, putt putt, activities, water/fishing, lazy rivers, etc. I’d recommend Hilton Head but it’s a bit further to drive.
