Cost of travel soccer

We are considering a spot on a travel team. However, $3,500 looks steep for 2-3 weekly practices and a few tournaments. Is this a normal cost for teenage years…?

Yes. That's how much some people pay. If you don't think it's worthwhile please don't join the team.

Yes, that's roughly what it costs... plus uniforms, unless that was included in your number

It's a lot of money if you're used to rec. But consider that the cost includes:

- A coach for those 2-3 weekly practices, games, and tournaments (along with training and equipment)
- Field upkeep/rental fees
- Referee fees (3 refs per match)
- League admin fees
- Tournament entry fees
- Club overhead (which, despite the snarky comments on this forum, are not getting anyone rich)

Honestly, it may seem like a lot, but given the amount of time and coaching involved, it's really cheap when you consider it by hour!

That is our base price. We have dues twice a year that covers extra stuff

Normal, maybe a bit high. But it depends how many tournaments it covers and any winter training and or supplemental training.

Our base fee is $2400 but then we have about $400 in tournament fees and winter fees.

Yes normal. You will pay more for uniforms, bags, gear, etc. on top of that.

Your coat doesn’t guarantee playing time. So if your kid isn’t going to be playing in the games then take that into consideration as well.

ours base cost is higher. don't forget about travel costs, it adds up fast.

This is sort of where I landed when I thought of it this way, too.

Make sure you ask what the tuition covers.

For SYC the fee is just the club fee. You will have to pay for each tournament and depending on the coach it could be 2-3 or it could be more. Also, you will have to pay for the coach's hotel, airfare, car and meals for some of the tournaments.

Also remember you need to budget in the bribes. Best before U13. How else is that soccer coach affording the BMW sports car?

Can you give a more detailed breakdown of this?

I don’t see how this adds up to $3500 per player on a team with 15-20 players

Really? Well, the coach is making somewhere around $25-$30K a year or more. So that can be half the cost right there. Field space in the DMV is very expensive- sometimes $100/hour or more. Assume 2-3 teams on the pitch, so you are looking at $6-8K per year per team. League fees are a few thousand, then tournament fees are somewhere around $1-2K per team per tournament. Then add overhead for team management, insurance, whatever app is used, VEO or trace costs... it adds up quickly.
