| Many of our neighbors have fully moved out and used stages furniture for the open house. We are considering moving out of the area and would prefer to sell before we move. Our furniture is fine but not spectacular and we keep things tidy. Sorry for the basic questions - this is our first house so we never sold before and we are in very early planning stages. |
| ask your realtor or a friend with good taste. In certain neighborhoods to get top dollar you need to do it up (but don't renovate first; that's a big mistake) - move out and get more out than you think. Others are so hot it doesn't matter |
don’t renovate but paint if it needs it |
Meh. I know that’s the conventional wisdom but I fail to see how fresh paint matters. |
| Depends on the house and and where it is. |
| No, but move the majority of the stuff out. |
OP here - North Arlington. Well maintained house, comparable homes in the area have recently sold for $1.5-1.7. |
|
No. We just bought a home and actually had to give a rent-back to the sellers for about a month after the closing. So not only did they not move out before they listed it, they didn't even move out before we closed.
If it's an easy-to-sell house, just make sure it is super clean and decluttered. If it is not an easy-to-sell house, then that is a different matter and you might consider moving out and staging it. A good real estate agent can advise you on all of this. |
Who wants to buy a dingy house? First impressions matter and in many places it’s not a sellers market anymore. |
You don't have to move out. You'll get going rate on that either way. |
People who are going to renovate anyway and don't want to pay for someone else to have just done it. |
Painting is usually a good idea. Different than renovating. |
Agree with the PP above you. If the house already has properly updated kitchens and baths and nice floors, then yeah, have fresh neutral paint so the house is move in ready. If it needs a bunch of updating anyway, no need to waste money on paint. |
Most people don’t want to renovate. There is a much larger market for a nicely renovated house than a house that needs a lot of work. |
| Op, do you have kids, pets? It makes a difference |
