How have other countries reacted to having an American pope?

Curious given all the agitation instigated by Trump.

Instigated by Trump?? Has Trump said anything about the new Pope?

I’m only hearing positive things.

An American pope? I think Peru would like a word.

I don’t see why anyone would care where he was born. Isn’t that the whole point of the vote? May the best man win? Plus aren’t they supposedly divinely influenced by God to choose the right person or something like that? I’m clearly not religious.

What does Trump have to do with it? He's not Catholic.

You people are either disingenuous or not paying attention.

OP, I have been reading some Spanish news and, similar to here, it has been portrayed as a welcome buffer to (if not repudiation of) Trump. There has been analysis of the geo-political importance of the choice. Of course there's a lot of "it's a complex decision" talk. But definitely people are focusing on the contrast between the figures of Pope Leo and Trump.

Specifically, I have seen a lot of focus on Pope Leo as a defender of migrants, as a priest who chose to live humbly among the poor.

I’m surprised that there isn’t much talk about how he, as a foreigner and American no less, was installed as a bishop in Peru. This is why he had to become a Peruvian citizen. It smacks of colonialism to me. As a Catholic, it makes me uncomfortable. (Yes, there are other things to be uncomfortable about.) I don’t know much about the man personally yet, but the choice to become a Peruvian in order to accept an office doesn’t sit right with me.

I bet he converts so he can have a televised baptism in the Sistine chapel with the Pope. He will likely ask if da Vinci can paint him on the ceiling!

I'll be team Leo if he roots out all the pedos lurking in the priesthood.

I don’t know anyone who cares where he is from. Or cares at all. He is for Catholics.

That is weird. Did they not have anyone in the Country to be this position? Who appointed him?

According to news sources, he allowed 2 of them to mingle with kids even after being found guilty of this already. Doubtful.
