This question is for parents of players

Anonymous
I’m a soon to be college graduate and want to start a business focused on the US soccer club experience and environment. As a past player and reader of this forum it is quite clear that paying customers (e.g., parents) have mixed experiences with clubs who don’t meet the minimum expectations for the amount of money daddy or mommy pays for club dues and team fees.

So my questions for you are the following:

1) What gender is your player?
2) What year was your player born?
3) What level does your player compete at? (e.g., House/Recreation, ECNL-R, ECNL, GA1, GA2 etc.
4) What does your club rely on to organize the team experience for players and parents?
3) What are your three (3) greatest pet peeves as it pertains to your experience with your club experience? These can be during any stage of the experience (e.g., registration, uniforms, payments, tryouts, season games, tournaments, practices, travel arrangements, college engagement etc.)

I am writing a business plan and have a product concept that me and my collaborators believe will add value to the customer experience.

In advance, thank you for your time.

Step one: don’t be condescending to the people you want something from.

Fundamentally, the problem is a scarcity of money, time, and field space. Good luck with your app.

These never make money

Pet peeve mother of division 1 player
Coaches that are HS teachers and coaches on your staff
Coaches that funnel kids to their camp at every single break
Coaches that pick favorites
Coaches that scream

Yeah, you lost me the second you called us daddy and mommy. Please don’t be condescending to your target audience. In a pay to play system, we are the paying client and we deserve better treatment than we get and your post is a good example of what is wrong.

Wait, I don’t get it – why is coaches being high school teachers and coaches a bad thing?

Because they favor kids who pay to play on their club teams.

What is this business idea, OP? I'm curious.

Sounds like OP wants to build an app like teamsnap or playmetrics.

If yes, OP you are fundamentally misunderstanding the underlying issues, that have been mentioned already. Trying to fix this with an app is like painting the walls because your house is on fire

Biggest pet peeves are 1) lack of commitment from teammates who don't mark availability and/or show up for games, then 2) an arms race of organizations trying to create these "elite" club exclusive leagues with so much un-necessary travel for mediocre teams who are not national powerhouses by any means, and 3) placing young players in field positions permanently and not learning all of the positions, while also rostering players who are given very little playing time at too young an age.

The "app" field is saturated, OP.

Op, you sound very naive. From forming assumptions based on DCUM gripes to insulting the very people you want to be your clients, to the idea that any technology can solve for human behavior— your idea and plan are ridiculous.

If you really want to build a successful business in this space, go work for a club or league for a few years. Understand the reality of the youth sports world, the very thin margins, the challenges of negotiating for field space and the expectations from players and parents. Good luck.

Treating people you want something from like this will get you nowhere in the real world. I'm surprised mommy and daddy didn't teach you this. They failed you.

How did OP mistreat or insult anyone? Am I missing something?

Is your business plan an app or a new club?
