Messed up on AP exam

Anonymous
My ds completely messed up on his AP exam. He thinks he got the answers all right but did not write them in the right spots!! I have no idea how that can even happen but he came home so defeated. By the time he realized his mistake it was too late. So he might actually get a 1. Does it matter for a senior, beyond getting no college credit?

The poor thing! I'm sorry. The most important thing is his GPA, OP. Tell him not to worry.

It doesn’t matter. Congratulations to your son on finishing high school and on to the next chapter!

His GPA will not be affected and I am not talking to him about it further to not rub salt on wounds. What would be the upside to not scoring the exam though? Any?

Do not do this. He’s a senior. It does not matter.

Where are you located? My DD has had all her APs on the Chromebook this year. There hasn't been a paper/pencil option on any exam at their school.

This is a pretty harmless mistake.

Tell him to keep his study materials. Don't cancel the scores.

When the score comes back...if it's bad...pay for the answers to see what happened. I think it's important to know what happened as a learning opportunity.

He could maybe retake at your same school district (or another venue) next year if he desperately wanted the credit.

He knows what he did exactly, just messed up the order (I again don’t get how that can even happen but not asking further!) he’s upset bc he did not think he would do well and was so happy when done until he realized his mistake. He said it affected half the exam.

Is it graded by a computer or a human? He should at least tell the teacher what happened and see if they can do anything about it. I guess chalk it up to a lesson learned about keeping your wits about you during tests. He just may not get college credit. Not all grades accurately reflect knowledge anyway.

He actually did before he left the room. He said the teacher felt bad but said nothing could be done. And yes, he said the worst part was he thought to himself he had to go about it methodically, not make careless mistakes, and then made this giant careless mistake!

What test?

If it is important to have a score— contact College Board and file I believe it is called a discrepancy report. They will likely respond with three options: cancel, retake, or do nothing.

If kid wants to retake, they can probably do it the week after next when a retake exam is already scheduled for kids who had conflicts today/ were sick. Am

If score isn’t important — then do nothing.

He's a senior. It doesn't change much. It sucks, but he can move on. Maybe cancel the score as others have said if he's sure he messed up that badly.

I feel so bad for your son! I’ve no advice. I just hope he feels better and I am very curious on how that mistake was made.

This is why we have high school. Get it out of the way before college
