Stop setting Chromebooks on fire.

Hey, please tell your kids to beat their idiot friends who are trying to short circuit the charging ports of Chromebooks to set them on fire at school.

Schools can't discipline children, so it's left up to us.

I thought this was parents fed up with technology run amok in schools and going full luddite on chromebooks. Because goodness knows I've seriously considered doing so about 3 times a week.

This happened to my coworker's daughter in Loudoun County--the student sitting next to her grabbed her laptop and stuck the mechanical pencil in and it started smoking. Her daughter is very upset that she now has no computer for her SOLs and the school doesn't have any additional ones to lend. It is also somewhat of a paperwork nightmare for my coworker to get everything in order so she doesn't have to pay for the replacement (witness accounts, etc).

Listen to the children. Chromebooks should be set on fire. They are ruining education.

Also tell your children to stop sticking paper clips in power outlets. Any kid who does this at the secondary level needs to get the boot for the remainder of the quarter.

If they’re all on fire they don’t have to use them. Buy textbooks.

The SOL’s are unimportant. Tell your friend to opt out and relax. Unless it’s a graduation requirement then the school will figure it out.

I hate to say it but most of these kids are feral and COVID only exacerbated it they don’t want to learn period.

This. Behavior run amuck. Kids don’t care about learning, stewardship, respecting items that don’t belong to them. They just DGAF, and neither do their parents. Go figure.

Kids have realized there are zero consequences. In the past if you set school property on fire you would be suspended for five days and possibly criminally charged.

Now nothing happens except maybe you get pulled out of class and an administrator says - don’t do that again, it’s dangerous.

Hence the OP proposal

My county has no more money so only the crappy free online “textbooks” are available. The one for my MS course was written at a third grade reading level, is overly simplistic in explanations, and riddled with outdated understandings.

If a teacher advocates for books they better be prepared for some good ol retaliation.
