| Do these spots all go to club players, or are there kids who have played in the past but not with club experience? |
| It’s possible but challenging to do. I think there were maybe 1-2 girls last year on JV without prior club experience. Obviously would be helpful if your daughter is really tall and/or has good athleticism. |
| All club players unless your DD is very tall. Same story at pretty much any large HS. |
| I've heard that it is pretty much impossible. |
| My DD is in Richard Montgomery HS (the varsity team is the state champion). It is practically impossible to make the varsity team if you are not a club player. Even being club player will not guarantee you a spot on the varsity team. However, the story is different for the JV team. Last year there were not enough players with club experience to take all the spots on the JV team. We ended up with a team where almost half of the players only had rec experience. The bench was deep though - most players got little court time. Most rec players played only against weak opponents, when the results were pretty clear before the game even started. |

The volleyball team is extremely competitive at McLean high school, especially for freshman. I don’t even believe they have a freshman team, just JV and varsity.
Conversely, the field hockey team usually has a freshman club that pretty easy to join with no experience (my daughter did), as well as cross country running. In the winter, track is shorter distances and they do field events, but in the fall for cross country they run 5Ks. Both of those are pretty open to newcomers. |

Is this the same at all schools?
DD will be a freshman at South Lakes. She has very little club experience but she is tall. |
| Freshman team should be fine for an athletic girl. |
I dont think they have a freshman team. |
| While we’re on the subject, what is the practice schedule? Our school posted tryout dates but I can’t find anything about the practice schedule before the start of school. |
| In Fairfax County, assume it is every weekday, annoyingly. Plus games on the weekend sometimes. |
I can speak for Montgomery County: they practice or play every day of the week during the season. It is a good experience that also helps the players for the club tryout season. |
| For Mclean HS, last year my daughter was on the JV volleyball team. They practiced all weekdays, except for days when there was a game. Nothing ever landed on a weekend |
How long is regular HS season- 6 weeks? |
| Any HS players pull off being on club soccer in same season and at same time on HS volleyball? If night soccer practices, do most HS do afternoon volleyball practice so could be possible or is HS when have to decide which sport? |
