Starlink has launched more than 3x the number of satellites that were in space before Starlink began positioning satellites. The Trump administration did Musk a huge favor by deciding that increasing broadband access should be neutral, ie not favor physical cable over satellite, arguably handing internet access to underserved rural areas to Starlink. But putting essential communication in the hands of a private company, especially a company owned by this guy, is dangerous, not just nationally but internationally. Seems to me this should be run by an international body as a trust, especially considering the use of them in war.

You must be new to the satellite space. There have long been sat companies, ie iridium. Musk bought an antiquated business. Very few people in the world need satellite because the cell phone infrastructure got cheap and proliferated. Yes, the Trump administration is helping to prop up a small niche business. Ultimately, it will fail. It cannot support the capacity needed for wide scale adoption.

Is the Trump administration going to be throwing contracts to Intelsat and Iridium too? Why prop up one commercial satellite company over the others? Oh right, bringing back a modern spoil system. Cronyism.

Sorry, Starlink is not essential communication.

We've had comms in space forever. Telstar? Telsat? There are plenty of private concerns up there already.
