ACPS middle school sport

Anonymous
Hi! I have a rising sixth grader in ACPS who will attend George Washington MS. What are the middle school sports options for fall, winter, and spring? How are the tryouts and slots? I assume that it is difficult to make the teams as a sixth grader with the number of students, so that the teams are mainly 8th graders? Do they compete against Jefferson-Houston, Patrick Henry, and Hammond? Or against Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church City, and Prince William County too? We missed the meeting because we were out of the country visiting family. Also, if your kid plays MS sports, can they still play travel or rec teams?

There are a number of sports available, though it’s not quite clear to me which are middle school sports, which are high school sports (for 8th grade), which are intramurals, and which are just for fun. There were several soccer options available in the fall, I think both intramurals and a fun league. There was basketball in the winter, and track this spring. They mostly compete against the other middle schools (Hammond, Jeff Houston, etc.). I don’t get the sense that the programs are very competitive, and there seem to be plenty of 6th graders participating. I don’t think there are rules preventing your kid from playing on another team; probably just depends on whether they can make practices and games.
