| When I last checked the IPEDS website, it seemed like the latest data was from 2022-23...does this mean that US News uses 2022-23 data and next year will be using 2023-24 data, which would mean that the funding fiascos this year won't matter for next year's rankings? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure somehow. |
| It doesn’t matter. Schools do not radically change quality year-to-year. |
Sure, but that has nothing to do with the rankings, which can change completely overnight. |
|
IPEDS basically contains CDS data. Currently, that is from the 2023-24 CDS, admission data for fall 2023 freshman (who would have applied during 2022-23)
IPEDS will roll over to data from the 2024-25 CDS in mid June 2025. That will be admission data for fall 2024 freshmen, who applied during the 2023-24 admission season. |
| Well, they RIF’ed all the people who work on it, so who knows now. |
| IPEDS is not impacted by the cuts. I know it is hard to believe but aggregating data is not a labor intensive process. College Scorecard and College Navigator are still being updated. |
Whatever the case may have been in the past, the OP appears to believe that these are not ordinary times, and that rapidly changing fundamental aspects will impact ranking positions. |
I'm asking if the rapid changes will impact this year's upcoming rankings or if the data is already locked in for this cycle ie they're using older data ie there's no chance the rankings will be impacted because anything that happened happened after the window for the data they're using this year closed or not |
The only way rankings change year to year in any meaningful way is if the criteria and weighting of that criteria changes by the publisher. So if US News starts going away from DEI criteria, you'll see a change, etc. |
| The main survey from U.S. News had a deadline last year of June 14th. However, the financial year for colleges commonly ends on June 30th. Further research would be needed to determine whether or not a supplementary survey would be due back after this time. |
Exhibit A as to why we should all ignore college rankings. They are folly. |
|
Yes, much of the data is lagged. It takes time to get the latest info.
For example, last fall’s ranking used FY 2022 and academic year 2021-22 data for financial resources. |
+1 they only really change year to year because USNWR tweaks their formula every year to keep the sheeps' attention. |
| Why are you people so obsessed with this magazine? |
| The rankings are sillier than ever. Read an article about the changes in 2019-2020 where USNWR started de-emphasizing graduation rates and retention rates in favor of the number of Pell grant students. It’s fine to track and share the number of Pell awards. But this info is not particularl helpful if you’re trying to assess to assess how well a school performs academically. It’s just silly. |
