Looking for a termite protection for new home. For those who have the Sentricon system, how long has
It been in place, is it effective, and approximate cost to have it in place. Anything to watch out for and Name of firm Monitoring the system. TIA |
| We used green pest services. Approx. $900/year. Tech said two years of installation would take care of termites for the next 10+ years (we found an active infestation). No clue whether that is true. . . |

We found a company that put down Termidor into the ground all around the foundation.
Previous owner had used Sentricon. The termites just went in between the bait stations and got in the house. Previous owner had to eradicate the termites and repair the damage before we could settle. No thanks. |
| Termite damage is actually fairly uncommon. You can probably save the cost of a program and instead much less expensively have a service come out and inspect for damage and the presence of termites every couple of years if you're worried. You can repair a lot of wood damage for $900/yr, barring an unusual infestation. |
Forgot to mention. We paid approx $900 as a one-time cost for the Termidor a few years back. It lasts for 10 years. Purely for peace of mind we also get an annual inspection for maybe $150. |
| Are you in DC? I’ve lived here for 40 years and I’ve never known anyone with a termite problem. |
Termites are a widespread issue in DC, VA, and southern MD. I know many people who have had termite issues in homes in NW DC and in NoVA. Western MD and PA usually get cold enough in winter to reduce the termite issues. |
| Our realtor recommended against ongoing termite service contracts, saying that termite damage is very rare and remediation almost never needed during sale/purchase transactions in her experience. She suggested periodic inspections which should catch any damage before it becomes significant, at a much lower cost than a service contract. |
Probably thanks to the termite barrier around their houses. The old chemicals were more toxic and lasted longer. |
liquid borate is extremely effective on new builds |
Around 20 years ago we were looking at a house in Silver Spring. We didn’t make an offer but we later saw that extensive termite damage had been discovered, during the inspection that was necessary at the time for getting a mortgage. |
Hello, it's me! NW DC! They managed to get into our detached garage and the window sill of our main house. Disgusting. |
