Who will be Trump’s Ford?

Anonymous
Ford was one of American’s finest presidents and the only president never elected to the office.

He was selected and confirmed after Agnew resigned in disgrace, then became president after Nixon. He pardoned Nixon, which helped the country move on but likely lost his own “reelection”.

Is there anyone in today’s Republican party who could be a Ford?

It was a mistake to pardon Nixon. I don’t know if Trump will ever be in a position to need a pardon, but if future president ever grants him one, they can burn in hell for eternity alongside him.

Today’s Republicans get voted out of office if they don’t toe the MAGA line. The Republican Party is ensuring that there is no decency in their ranks.

This doesn’t work unless Vance resigns in disgrace. And good luck with that.

He’ll be impeached. Everybody hates Vance.

+1. In hindsight it was a very big mistake. Nixon resigned because he was going to be removed from office. Pardoning Nixon and then rehabilitating his image upon his death were actually much more damaging than we realized. And for what? It would have been perfectly fine and health for the country for Nixon to have gone to his grave a disgraced man.

Back then, no one could conceive of the American voters wanting a man who was a known liar, crook, and felon as their president.

There are no decent Republicans in office any more.

The Supreme Court already pardoned Trump with their BS immunity decision.

Did I miss something? Who rehabilitated his image? I don't believe I've heard anyone pining for the good ol days of Nixon anywhere.

Agree. He died with a stain. IMO Ford did the right thing to pardon him. Let the country move on while Congress passed lots of legislation to restrain the office of the president. Most of the legislation Trump is trying to violate today.

Imprisoning a president will always be viewed by some as political retribution even if warranted

It was a betrayal of all small r republican values that this country was founded on. No kings, no one above the rule of law, even presidents. You can draw a direct line from the Nixon pardon to the trump immunity decision

Ford also pardoned Vietnam war draft dodgers, whole Trump is trying to put everyone who disagrees with him in prison.
