A good college graduation gift?

Anonymous
My niece is graduating college and I’d like to get her a gift, along with probably some cash.

Any good ideas— things your kids have enjoyed especially — are welcome.

She is a liberal arts major who doesn’t have a job yet, and will probably move back home for a while, so I don’t want to get her apartment things just yet.

Thank you.

Not unless you are very familiar with her style and preferences. I’ve gotten many useless bags and purses over the years. If you do go this route, for the love of all things do NOT have it monogrammed.

I'm in the same situation. I'm going to the graduation of my son's girlfriend. I bought an expensive bottle of champagne, some cute girly wine stoppers, and and for crystal wine glasses.

LOL.

I'm 55 years old and I think I've handled candlesticks twice in my life. First was when I borrowed a pair from my aunt for a high school production of Fiddler on the Roof. Second was stopping a dinner table fire at my idiot inlaws who believed in candlesticks at the dinner table but who were always catching things on fire with them (catching fire with the candles, not the sticks).

I can't think of gift more useless to a recent grad than candlesticks. Maybe an iguana? Or some long-lived bird? A large boulder with their last name engraved on it, for placing in front of a house (knowing they'll be living in apartments for the next 20 years)? An expired tin of oysters? Some cash but with the explicit instructions that they use it to invest in war bonds?

Yeah, I bought my wife a fun tote bag once (Marimekko). It's been in the closet for 25 years.

It’s a quote from a movie. Those other ideas are great too, though.
