Do grades matter anymore 4th quarter Senior
3RD Quarter grades were good,
but 4th quarter are
B
C
D
E

E

D's and E's definitely matter. C and above, don't worry.

Particularly if your kid was submitted to a selective college, a big slide downward to D's and E's would be a red flag and could lead to their offer being rescinded.

It depends what the 3rd quarter grade was. You can look up the calculations for the final semester grade here (bottom of page 4):

+1 if the final semester grade is D/E, you might have a problem.

No idea about UMD. Some universities retract offers (they really do) if grades are very, very low.

When my kid was a senior, the principal said that the prior year, 4 kids had their offers rescinded but he didn't give any more details.

UMD sends out form letter emails to indicate receipt of transcript. My DC had terrible senioritis - lots of final semester grades of C. UMD “we noticed the drop in grades” *gulp* “we are concerned about your success first semester, here’s a whole bunch of academic resources to support you” *phew*.

Did DC get it together in fall? Nope, continued bad academic habits and discovered you can’t cram and entire semester the week before finals and dig out of a low C. Ended up on academic probation, but got it together in spring.

Try to get your kid to pull it together here at the end for st least Cs. Be prepared for a tough fall.
