Someone shot themselves at UVA’s Rotunda overnight

The police texts called it a “self-inflected gunshot wound.”

I have a child there who has struggled with suicide ideation (been hospitalized recently.). I have not heard from her this morning… That said she is a girl and girls don’t typically use guns.

Does anyone know anything?

I’m sorry for the stress this must be causing you, but I don’t think the politics forum is the best place for this.

+1 I hope your dd is safe and my heart breaks for the family of the deceased. Maybe ask to have this thread moved to the College and Universities board?

I feel your anxiety. I texted my DD. Her close friend has a lawn room near the rotunda. I will post if I hear anything.

I reached out to my daughter too and understand your anxiety. Hope we all hear something soon.

Oh this hurts my heart. College can be a tumultuous time for some.

Just read on a UVA parent Facebook page that someone’s DC heard on a police scanner that the individual may not be a UVA student. Also, one of the advisories from the police states that the identity of the individual is unknown.

And there’s this news story.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - University of Virginia Police responded to a fatal incident involving a firearm on grounds early Monday morning.

The university said a man was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the southern side of the Rotunda shortly after 4:30 a.m. The man’s identity was not immediately known, according to UVA.

The incident prompted the university to send out an emergency alert shortly before 5 a.m.

UVA continued to urge people to avoid the area shortly before 8 a.m. as the investigation continued.

For UVA parents, this “alert” is it a text message the kids can mute or is it one of those audible alarms you (used?) to get for amber alerts? I imagine they can and do adjust their phone settings but any audible alert could be upsetting. My heart goes out to these young adults.

So sad. Finals time …

Knowing it was a man hopefully eases your mind, OP. And the other PP who mentioned a daughter. Those minutes seem interminable when you have a child who has mental health struggles.

Someone else's family will get a call this morning, which is terribly sad no matter the circumstances.

I'll be sending my own off to school in a year or so, and I know that I will worry like this. I already do, but those extra miles and degrees of independence will be hard.

Oof that was a mistake. I see it's been redirected.

It's a text and an email. Not an amber alert.

Just received an e-mail from the University. It says, among other things:

"Shortly after 4:30 AM on Monday morning, University Police responded to reports of shots fired on the southern side of the Rotunda. When police arrived authorities found a deceased male who appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. After securing the weapon, University Police initiated an investigation, which is currently ongoing. We ask that members of the public continue to avoid the area until the investigation has concluded and the scene is clear.

Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not able to share the individual’s identity at this time, but officials have confirmed that the deceased is a 2019 graduate of the University. University Police will provide additional updates as appropriate."

I think we can close this thread.
