Ideas for half-time or 2/3 job as a transition to retirement

Anonymous
My husband is retiring in a couple of years. I also want to downshift, but I'd like to still have some money coming in. Ideally, I'd work no more than three or four days a week and remotely or hybrid (though happy to travel).

I've read recently that this is a new trend. Americans downshifting slowly instead of abruptly retiring.

What kinds of jobs might exist out there for a late career fundraiser/PR/communications professional? And what could I expect to earn? I'm making about $260K now as a fundraising manager. Since getting out of management is my goal, I know I'd be looking at a huge salary cut. And that's just fine. I'm good at major gifts, but most of those are full-time.

Does anyone have any thoughts on organizations I should be thinking of?

Hey - I'm not above that kind of work. I've thought of applying to work in a bookstore too. -- OP

The obvious choice would be to consult. Is that not an option?

I don’t suppose there’s any good resources on how to support someone with a severe case of imposter syndrome transitioning to a career in consulting during early retirement?

There are a lot of small businesses that can't afford a full time marketing team that might be interested in your services. Networking among your friends and current professional contacts (assuming no contractual barriers) is the best way to start building a client base.

OP here. It might be. But only if I'm hired by a consulting firm that gives me all the freedom that I need at this stage. I don't have any interest in being self-employed. I'm exhausted from being in charge.

OP here. Are you saying I have imposter syndrome because I want out of marketing?

What about selling real estate? Or teaching - you could host seminars in your field. If you're open to doing retail, I would do it at a place you already shop so the discount you get actually helps, like Costco or Trader Joe's or a clothing store you already buy from.

Oops - meant to say "out of management?"

Hm - I like the teaching idea. I already guest lecture occasionally. Thanks!
