The House is scheduled to vote Monday on the contentious anti-boycott act, which seeks to penalize American citizens with fines up to $1 million or prison terms as long as 20 years for boycotting the Israeli regime.

Sponsored by pro-Israel congressmen Mike Lawler and Josh Gottheimer, the bill will broaden the US anti-boycott law by targeting voluntary, values-based political actions undertaken by American citizens.

The underlying objective is to shield the Israeli regime from non-violent international pressure campaigns, notably the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (BDS).

Rights groups say the legislation criminalizes constitutionally protected political expression and is part of a broader push to suppress opposition to Israeli genocide, apartheid, and illegal settlement expansion, under the guise of fighting antisemitism.

Protesting is permitted, unless it's against Israel
Foreign nations meddling in our politics is bad, unless it's Israel

So many of my contemporaries are really getting pulled in by this- they aren't Trump voters, they aren't conservative, they are Jewish and liberal and think this part of Trump is good. They are being played.

Also, if they think criminalizing boycotts of Israel is going to end well for Jewish people, they aren’t that bright. This cr@p turns people against Isreal.

You have people like me, who think Israel has gone too far in Gaza, but also don’t love the widespread protests. So basically, not a strong opinion either way. But if you start arresting Americans citizens exercising 1A rights— or for choosing how to spend their own money— I’m going to be pissed. Just because I’m not a fan of the NON-VIOLENT protests (before you say it— different from taking over buildings, violence, creating hazards, etc) does not mean I think the protestors should be arrested. And I should be able to spend the money I earn however I GD please. This makes me much less likely to buy an Israeli product. Because I don’t like being told I must financially support Israel in my discretionary spending, on top of all the money we pour into a first world, wealthy nation that can support itself.

Israeli Strauss sold Sabra to PepsiCo last year.

The government can (and does) boycott boycotters, but cannot criminalize boycotts.
