9 Days in Sardinia or Sicily?

Which one did you prefer for summer travel? I will have a car and plan to stay in 3 different places for 3 days each.

Sicily all day, every day. So much more to do, much better tourism infrastructure, and the food is better.

There is more to see in Sicily.

This 9 days driving around Sicily is my dream trip but I’m not confident enough of my driving there. I would start in Palermo and then go to cefalu for beach time and take some of the boat trips out to the islands. Then I would drive down to agrigento for the day then over the Ragusa for a couple nights (that’s four hours driving so kind of a lot but would avoid getting a hotel near agrigento). I might do something like a farm stay there outside Ragusa. Then I would go over to the east coast so I could see the ruins at Taormina and climb Mount Aetna. Maybe swinging by Syracusa too.

I’ve thought about doing this and just hiring a driver for the day from cefalu to Ragusa….feel like I could use public transport for the other pieces.

This is one of my three dream vacations.

A couple of years ago, DH and I flew into Catania, rented a car and drove all over Sicily for three weeks. We had no plan, just went wherever we felt like going. It was fabulous. Driving there was super easy, except for in Palermo!!

I have never been to Sardinia, but I'm Italian-American who has traveled all over most of Italy since I was eight years old, and Sicily was a real highlight. Spectacular place in every way. The food is really incredible. We plan to retire in Italy and Sicily is high up on our list as a potential location.

My sister went and she said there were a lot of curvy mountain roads. I don’t do curvy mountakn or anything with cliffs!

Where would someone look to stay in Sardinia if you wanted an Airbnb where you could either overlook the water, or walk to the beach, as well as drive (not too far) to great hiking?

We did 8 days in Sicily and definitely want to go back. We did a day or 2 in each place and your 3 day plan is better. Driving was fine. We rented the car after 2 days in Palermo and were mostly on major roads. Driving in Taormina was the most challenging but we really only drove in and out, left the car at the hotel in between.

The nice thing about Sardinia is that it is much less crowded than many other places in Italy. If I had 9 days, I'd go from north to south. Though 5 days is enough and you could see another part of Italy since flights are so cheap.

Sicily is great. I did a 10 day trip with my husband and parents. Rented a car in Palermo and spent a few days there, including a day trip to Agrigento. Then drove to Taormina, stopping in Cefalu for a day. Ended the trip in Siracusa, where we did side trips to Noto and Villa Romana del Casale. Flew out of Catania.

We did 2+ weeks in Sicily— started in Siracusa, then Noto, Agrigento, Erice, Cefalu, the Aeolians, and Taormina/Etna. One of our best trips ever. Driving was generally fine.
