Insight by on MacArthur

Today is the last day to register your children for their new school. My son was picked for MacArthur high school and I am wondering if I should go forward with it he is currently at Basis and he really likes Basis but I wonder about DCPS options. I’m not here to talk all about Basis. I just would like to know would have been your experiences at MacArthur or if you guys heard anything about MacArthur.

If I register my child for MacArthur will Basis be notified. 😂

If you enroll at MA, your child will lose their spot at BASIS. So start by researching the previous threads on MA… And confirm with your child. Is this what they want, if they like where they are?
Did you visit MA? At least did you attempt the commute?

Why are you considering a move if your kid likes where he is?

Is he doing well at Basis? If he doesn’t mind the rigor and is getting good grades, if he has friends, etc chances are Basis is going to be similar if not better outcomes for graduation and college options. Assuming you aren’t living in Foxhall/Palisades/Georgetown/AU/Cleveland Park/Tenleytown, I bet Basis is also a better commute for him as it’s in the middle of the city next to a Metro.

If he wants a more typical high school experience (bigger building, better sports offerings, more kids for finding friend group, less accelerated program but still access to some Advanced Placement etc) AND the commute to the far west of DC isn’t an issue, then that may be the reason to move. If he is succeeding at Basis I am sure he will do well at McArthur and may even have more options like the academies. If he’s not getting great grades at Basis he may do better at MacArthur and that would probably help his college options.

Good luck!

To be 100% honest, he is not exceeding at Basis. His grades are very mid and he did not pass one of his comprehensive exam exams. I am at the point where I think a typical high school may be better for him, but I am nervous that he may not like or want the change.
