TJ acceptances

I know kids who were in Alg. 2, all hns, and 4.0 gpa that got rejected. But, there are kids in normal Algebra with a lower gpa and accepted. How does the whole process work? Are the sps questions personal questions? Also, I heard many kids did not get the pse question right, and wrote an essay for the wrong answer and still got in… If you got accepted this year, lmk how they select their students. Thanks.

This would be heartbreaking for the Alg 2 kid if true. While my child did get in (with a profile of the Alg 2 kid in your scenario) we are not given special insight as to how or why a child was selected.

There was a meeting at our middle school to discuss the sps questions led by a representative from TJHSST. She listed about 10 topics that were general guidelines for the essay questions. Essentially questions were "show how you overcame a difficult situation," "demonstrate how you used your leadership skills in a meaningful way," or "give us an example of how you are a good citizen." I think how personal the response is would be up to the child and a matter of judgement.

Hmm thanks for this. If this is the case, why do people put so much pressure for getting into Mathcounts or sci. olympiad? At Rachel, those two are seen like the golden ticket. Are any of these clubs taken into account by TJ?

Because they used to count before the revamped admissions process. The old system favored kids from schools that are TJ focused and so have these clubs and have pathways for kids to get to Alg 2 in 8th more readily. Most other schools do not.

Is this middle school Walt Witman middle school? If so, is it legal to go give out SPS questions to few schools and not to others?

We just have the main info during the fall of 8th grade for TJ, we haven’t been handed out sps questions before…

It seems like most kids getting in are from curie or take curie classes. I don’t think ive met a person with a kid who didn’t do anything but look at a few practice problems and get into TJ without prep

That is not exactly giving out questions, that was just an example and the outline questions actually can be found on the admission website.

TJ rep goes to many of the middle schools and provide an admissions presentation. If they don't attend each school, there are usually admissions presentations nearby.

The SPS questions are opportunities for students to share about their Science Olympiad experiences, etc, if they fit with the question. Perhaps its an example of how they used their leadership. The evaluators can't use information if the student doesn't provide it. These essays are ways to do that.

Does Curie have an entrance exam to enroll in their program?

Hello, I was the one who said that post and I was not the one who said their school gets the leaking of SPS. My daughter goes to Rachel Carson, so i’m not sure which school is leaking sps questions but yes, that is very serious and i’m not sure if it’s allowed…

I am the one who posted about the TJ rep and sample questions. Essentially she gave us a list of topics that are found on the TJ application website. Forgive me is I misspoke as I attended the meeting 1.5 years ago.

I don’t think curie has a TJ prep class, does it? I’ve only seen core subjects on there.
