Would appreciate thoughts on whether/how Herbert Hoover supports students with ADHD who require support with executive functioning - especially new 6th graders.
Does the school know how to support students? I tried contacting the school's principal and special education coordinator. No response from either. I'm getting the feeling this is a school that's best for high performing, self-motivated students who require little to no direct instruction. Thanks. |
You'll never get a response from her. |
Thanks. What a shame. Can you share more? What is the experience of students in general? Does the school create a sense of belonging for students? How do the support 6th graders new to the middle school experience? |
I can’t speak to Hoover but I’ve had 2 students with disabilities go through MCPS middle school. One had ADHD and attended Cabin John. They offered a study skills/organization class for one period a day that was an enormous help for DD. She took it each year. The teacher helped her identify missing work and served as a liaison of sorts when she was worried about approaching a teacher. This was a long time ago but I assume it’s still offered in most if not all middle schools. DD also had co-taught classes which sometimes helped and sometimes not. It depended on the students who were placed in the classes with her. There could be a lot of distracting behavior. DS with another disability also found this to be the case in MS but its worth asking about. |
I'm a teacher of a school that feeds into Hoover. We'd had some difficulties with communication. If your child has a 504 plan, your child's current case manager *should* schedule a transition meeting into middle school with you and Hoover's counselor(s) to discuss what the transition is like and what classes they offer. I would Reach out to your child's 504 case manager (if they have one) to discuss this. |
Seversl years ago, MCPS started "quarantining" messages that Outlook thought was spam. These quarantined messages would be listed within 1 email sent at the end of the day. Although 95% if the time, the messages were spam or junk emails, every once in a while, a parent email would be in quarantine. I say that tp say, after checking daily for years, some people may not thoroughly check those end of day quarantine emails. You may think we are ignoring you when, in fact, the email may not have been seen at all. |
