Are students expected to learn material before class and class is review? |
In some classes, yes.
The class isn't review but the classroom time is to engage with clarifications and questions as opposed to introducing the material. |
If I ask you the teaching style at your child's current middle school, could you answer with a single comprehensive answer?
TJ is no different - the teachers have at least as much autonomy as at any other FCPS school. |
As others say, it's of course going to vary by teacher.
But for what it's worth, I don't think our junior has had any classes run like this, at least to any significant extent. He's always (for the classes he's interested in, anyway) telling us about "Today Mr. XX talked about YY", as if YY is a completely new topic. |
unlike base schools, where teachers may skip or gloss over difficult units at their discretion, TJ is strict about covering the full syllabus in depth. |
No, in our experience as freshmen, my kid spent most of the time studying after learning the material in class. No pre-studying, and doing great. |
Similar but DD’s experience has been that for most math classes you are expected to figure stuff out on your own vs more direct instruction. She normally does that post class not as prep for the class though. This was hard to get used to the first few months and would be rough for kids not strong in math. |
