Book suggestions for older teen son

Anonymous
My DS used to love reading but does less these days. He is proactively looking for a book good enough to compete with the draw of his phone and I’d love to help him find something. Any recommendations?

Books he’s liked in the past:
Bear Town
Pillars of the Earth
The Book Thief
Autobiography of Larry Bird
Kite Runner

He used to be really into dystopian young adult stuff but seems done with that. Mostly I’m just looking for a good story that will appeal to 17yo boys rather than 45yo women. He’s pretty into music (guitar), sports, and history.

On a recent car trip, we listened to Starter Villain by John Scalzi and both my teens really liked it. I especially recommend if he likes cats.

High Fidelity -- Nick Hornby
Boy 21 -- Matthew Quick

John Grisham books, maybe?

If he's into science at all, I recommend Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman.

Dh is loving murderbot and ds has the other book by the same author. Murderbot is being made into a tv series.

16 yo read the new hunger games prequel on vacation for nostalgia and finished within 48 hours. After 18 yo read it!

I recently read Things Not Seen and it is funny and wonderful

It’s about an invisible teen. His internal dialogue, his relationship with his parents and how he copes is very funny and relatable.
