Tax accountants weigh in

I had some very bad news today...my tax Preparer died..she was a dear friend. She had been working on our 2024 taxes and had just one figure to tweak...but unfortunately did not get to it. She had filed an extension though
Currently I have the hard copies of the 2024 taxes and forms she completed...without that tweak.
What are my options? She has all of our papers for 2024 and Hr block says they need those and they would start all over.
Can I do the forms by myself?
Please advise!

What is the tweak it's missing? Given the cuts at the IRS, I'd say just file what you have and claim ignorance. Blame it on your CPA.

Just file what you have.

My DH is self employed and she forgot to put his automobile expenses in which lowers the amount of tax we owe.

The return is like a book.

ask someone in her office.

Oh, I would just file them as is. How much does that tweak lower the taxes? Paying someone else to do them would probably negate that savings.

Make sure you get all your records somehow.

that's NOT going to...

never never use H&R Block. they are scam artists. loan sharks.

just research it yourself and file it.

not that hard.

Honestly, I might just let the auto expenses go this year. Paying for a re-do of everything given your tax return is "like a book," will probably cost more than you'll save.

This.

Sorry this happened. No tax preparer will make that change without redoing the whole return. We can’t for liability reasons.

H&R Block will be more expensive than you think.

How much were the auto expenses and how much is the Schedule C income? Reminder that only business miles are deductible, not all miles.

I agree with the pp that any tax savings would likely be eaten up by fees to have the returns redone.

I'd submit. You can bring this up with the new accountant you will have to hire for next year. If the difference is really meaningful, that person could amend this return.

This may sound crazy, but have you considered approaching a medium? Even a relatively short seance may be enough time to find out where to make the tweak.

Some tax preparers may stay relatively close and contactable to the human realm, at least till the first few filling seasons are over...
