Medical insurance for international travel or cruises

Anonymous
Do you get this? I don't care about insuring the cost of the trip. I just want healthcare and medical evac if needed.

Husband thinks we don't need it as the cruise is Caribbean and the other trip is to UK and France. He wants to just roll the dice.

WDYT?

Have you checked to see if any of the plans your company offers includes medical evac? I know that the Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) my company offers includes emergency medical evac.

I have dive insurance through DAN and roll the dice with the rest.

When I'm going to places wehre Medevac may be needed, I do buy that insurance but only for severe sitautions (medevac) not regular procedures. Medical care in ohter countries is cheap, so I can just pay out of pocket.

Husband claims we do have evac insurance through his company, but it wouldn't cover, say, stitches because you cut your foot on a rock or something.

Why would you need insurance to cover the cost of stitches?

I don't understand the logic of excluding Caribbean, UK and France. But we always get the primary medical/evacuation when we travel internationally. It's really cheap. And by buying it, we guarantee we won't need it. But I do know of 2 cases where people were flown home for medical treatment - and one was picked up in a remote area via helicopter.

Yes, because I had a pita experience: my ds was hospitalized, in my home country so not like I didn't know how to navigate things. Hospital demanded full payment (not cheap at all for people without in-country insurance) before release which ended up being complicated. We got reimbursed but it took a lot of work. This was for something fairly minor so I do get insurance now because that gave me a little taste of how awful it would be for a huge cost emergency.

Yes. If you have multiple trips in one year consider and annual plan.

Standalone medevac insurance is possible, but is also often bundled with trip cancellation/interruption coverage. If you expect no unusual risks on the trip, and have the financial capacity to absorb the cost of medical evacuation if it becomes necessary, maybe skip it. If you or one of your family has a medical condition which could flare up, are elderly, or if you plan to engage in activities which expose you to more than a normal level of risk, purchasing coverage may make more sense.

FEHB covers emergency medical costs abroad. Medicare does not. If you're covered under a different kind of policy, check about coverage.

Any suggestions on where to buy the travel insurance?

Use squaremouth or insuremytrip . Com. These are triavel ins aggregators. Just plug in what you want and you’ll get several quotes. I don’t buy trap cancellation insurance, don’t care about trip interruption I check the boxes for “primary” medical coverage and make sure it also includes medical evacuation ( almost always does). Really easy and inexpensive- but we’ve never made a claim.

I travel very frequently and buy med evac insurance. Med Evac back to your home country could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and we could not absorb that easily (could many people?). SquareMouth is good for comparisons.
