middle school that takes a low/no homework approach?

Please don’t let this devolve into a fight about the value of homework or not, as we are unlikely to solve that and it will only undermine the ability to get an answer. I’m seeking a safe/ nurturing middle school - private or public - in the area, that avoids or minimizes homework. By minimize, i mean occasional, high value projects come home, but nightly preset homework does not, as a rule, come home. is there such a thing? Our current school gives our 4th grader about 1.5 hours per night and as I’m looking at what appears to be 2 hours of homework on a soccer night right now, we need to make a change. The more i read about it, the more i see value at preserving a minimalist approach through middle school, and then having reasonable homework in high school. Again, i respect others who value homework, this isn’t about that, i just want to know if your school minimizes it and if so, what the school is. We are in upper NW DC, not far from Tacoma park or Bethesda schools. Thx!

Burke slowly ramps up homework between 6th, 7th, and 8th. And then a jump at 9th.

Lots of previous threads on this. Field and Burke are on the list. There are much smaller schools, like Sycamore, that may or may not be appropriate based on your specific child.

Just a bit about HS for Burke…though it may go light in MS, it is not light in HS at all! And, the summer work is insane!!! I have a child at one of the most rigorous schools in the DMV, too, and Burke’s summer work in HSsurpasses anything she ever did. Multiple books, essays, math and science work…he never really gets a break!

I hope you find what you seek…I agree that most homework doesn’t advance learning!

Not what you want to hear but our Loudoun County public MS gives almost no HW and HS does not give that much either apart from AP classes.

Any public school!

No, MCPS has math and reading.

It depends a lot on your kid, I have twins in middle school and the very efficient one is done in 30 minutes whereas the ADHD one in the exact same classes often has 2 hours of homework.

Any Title 1 school.

Bullis is not super homework heavy and my understanding is they give ample time during the day to do homework and they also have a homework lab after school with student teachers. I have a LS student and there isn’t too much homework in upper grades of elementary school. Certainly not 1.5 hours a night! What school is your child at?

Maybe if they take on a remedial workload.

This wasn’t me (OP). I don’t want to say what school in this thread, but it’s not Sandy Springs

Thanks for these replies. I’ve heard Burke was relatively lower key but don’t know anyone with kids in the high school. Interesting that some are saying public school. DS’s friends in the neighborhood public schools seem to have a lot of homework too. My nieces in Ohio in elementary get zero homework…..

My daughter in MCPS had zero homework all through elementary. It was a big jump when we moved her to private.
