I have a 2015 Outback and two kids, with a third coming soon. Does anyone have experience with fitting three kids across in their Outback? We will have a kid in a booster (who will be dropped off first for school), the infant, and a rear facing toddler. I can try putting in all three of the seats we have tonight, but I'm curious about actual lived experiences even if I can get everything to fit. For example, how much of a pain is it day-to-day if you have to help all three kids get buckled. We don't drive much, but my spouse and I each need a car that will fit all three kids to do school/child care pickups and drop offs and commute. My spouse will get a minivan in the next month or two to replace her car and we don't want two of them.
If I had to replace the Outback I'd likely consider buying a BMW X7, a Lexus TX, or leasing a three row EV (Rivian R1S, and if inventory opens up, a Kia EV9). I had a bad prior experience with Kia over a decade ago, but they seem to have a better reputation now. I'm not a fan of the Subaru Ascent even though I love my Outback. |
| It doesn't sound ideal. I have an outback and it's not very spacious back there. |
| Sounds miserable. With three children, you are in Minivan or large SUV territory. |

I have done 3 Dionos in an outback for a summer vacation. Doable but not pleasant.
I have an outback and 2 kids and just got another outback instead of the ascent as that thing is too big in my opinion. If you have 1 minivan for most of the travel you can use the outback in a pinch. Especially as the older one ages out of a sea. |
| We did it. It required an inflatable booster for our booster kid. Before we needed boosters we were able to puzzle 3 car seats in. I wouldn't say it was comfortable, but it worked as our secondary car just fine for years. Primary was a minivan. |
| We have three dionos in our 2019 outback. Two forward facing and one rear. Works fine but middle seat child does get upset at younger rear facing child kicking them. |
Op here. I didn’t really consider this aspect of squeezing everyone in. My rear facing child would definitely do this if given the opportunity. |
| Just get the damn minivan. The Pacifica Stow-and-Go system is ingenious and you get ride height of a larger SUV. Honda Odyssey drives more or less like a car. Sienna, don't know since they made it Hybrid. |
| Narrow seats. Toddler in the middle. |

Your toddler will be front facing soon. I'd test the situation using that scenario.
Both of my toddlers hated rear-facing and we turned them front-facing ASAP (at age 18-20 months). It's fine. My petite spouse sits in the middle seat during road trips with our two toddlers. It's fine. I think you can handle three kids in the back seat of an Outback. |
We had 3 Dionos in our 2013 Honda Fit. It’s fine in the outback. Long term you will want an 8 passenger so you can drive a grandparents or kids friend sometime. |
OP already said the other car will be a minivan. 8 passenger minivans exist (we have one). |
Sorry I lost interest in the wall of text after the initial description. I see the minivan note at end |
| Yes, it works fine and have been doing it for more than six years. There are way better things to spend money on than cars. |
