Colleges in drab, dull, ugly, or boringly remote towns

What is the appeal? I always wonder about this! Why on earth would one choose to go to school in deadsville?

It's about the school and the students and teachers and programs. One isn't walking around admitting stuff. People in beach towns would not be nearly as focused on working.

So they can concentrate on academics and not waste money.

Different strokes for different folks.

You might think Williamstown is boring and remote. I might have spent my childhood in a busy city and want something different and find nature beautiful and I am very excited about being able to ski all winter (I did not go to Williams but using it as an example).

I went to a college in deadville. We had a great time hanging out with each other on campus, made our own fun. It was actually a bit of a party school because of it.

This isn't really charaterizing Williamstown-that's a beautiful place. More like Waterville.

you can build real community in some of these isolated places. faculty and their kids go to the sporting events, your kids are more likely to go to a barbecue at a professor's house. At parent's weekend, we were amazed at how well the profs knew our kids and how excited they were to meet us. It's nice.

Have you ever been to Waterville? Beautiful area. Admit there isn't as much to do there but I love the area. I would make a better argument for the area around Bates which is more industrial, but I still find it nice.

This is college, as in collegium, an experience in which young adults of similar inclinations gather together with a common purpose. For this once-in-a-lifetime segment of life, remoteness can be enhancing.
