ISO beach vacation - Dec break

Anonymous
Family of four - two teenagers. Two grandparents joining us too for total of six.

Not sure where to look. Caribbean? We’ve all done Mexico already. Resort should be all inclusive but we want to be able to leave as well and do some history or sightseeing.

Also open to beach (or walkable to beach) Airbnb. Just not sure where to start. We are not gazillinaires either but it’s a kid’s 16th birthday and we are looking for something special to do.

Thanks!

If you want history and sightseeing, Puerto Rico is my rec. However, in the part of PR near to that, you aren’t near great beaches.

I’d look at Hawaii if you have enough time!

Are there even any beaches in the Caribbean that are warm enough to swim in Dec?

We went to St John in January and loved it. Our house rental (through vrbo) was not walkable to the beach though, but part of the fun is renting a jeep and exploring the different beaches on the island. There are some nice hikes, ruins of old sugar plantations, and Taino petroglyphs.

Yes of course but what's harder is finding one where its safe to explore like OP said.

Anguilla is an excellent choice - safe, friendly people, excellent food... but very expensive.

Half Moon Jamaica is great for mult-gen vacations and lots to do but you shouldn't really leave the property unless you have a tour booked.

We visit Anguilla each Dec/Jan and swim in the ocean each day. Many reasonable Airbnbs, if you book soon.

I’ll also suggest a cruise since the grandparents are coming along.

Unless you go far south in the Caribbean, there is no guarantee it will be warm in December. Definitely don't bank on anywhere in the Bahamas being warm (it can be but not always). We were also in Jamaica over Christmas one year and it was unbearably windy. We've have had good luck in December/January in the USVI and BVI.

What about renting a house or apt in Belize? Water might be warm enough Christmas week.

Costa Rica (esp Manuel Antonio) or Hawaii. Belize works too

What area do you like for Airbnb? Do you rent a car?

We always stay on the West End and I’m partial to Meads and Maunday Bays. Fantastic restaurants on the west end as well.

We rent a car from Ronnie Bryan each visit and have no complaints. Car rental is much cheaper than taxi and comes with beach chairs and cooler. My husband has no issues with driving on the other side, there isn’t much traffic to speak of.

We actually just booked a 10 day July trip as we were eager to get back.
