high school enrollment - Student Directory Information?

Anonymous
Doing my kid's online for 9th grade enrollment now. Do kids usually have name and telephone number in a school directory?

OP again. I'm just not really sure what this is asking:

Student Directory Information
You may elect to restrict the information DCPS releases. Please select the items below that you do not want DCPS to disclose without your consent, if any:
[list of various types of student info - e.g., name, telephone number, etc.]

By signing below, I affirm that:

• DCPS shall not disclose any information item which I have selected not to disclose.
• I hereby consent that DCPS may disclose any information item in case of No Response; and
• I understand that DCPS may still disclose information I have selected not to disclose if it is required to do so or if it is otherwise permissible under FERPA

Not sure what this means - is this a student directory, where students can look up the name and number of a classmate?

This is just a required DCPS form (for all schools at all levels) in case your school has a directory. Most don’t in my experience; they’re more common in elementary when a PTO puts them together.

“Directory information” is a category of info that FERPA allows schools to disclose as long as they give families notice and an opportunity to opt out. If you google FERPA and “directory information” you’ll find a longer explanation. This part of the enrollment forms is just DCPS offering that notice and opt-out opportunity. It doesn’t mean the particular school actually has a directory. In my experience, even although schools are allowed to release stuff like parent contact info unless parents opt out, they are reluctant to do so, which can make it hard to contact other parents.
