On the one hand, this makes sense, and Etats-Unis is farther up than United States which would be at the back.

But why the French alphabet rather than Italian or Latin? I don't know the Latin name of America but surely there is one, in the Vatican.

Because the Vatican is an institution still tied to arcane traditions of the past, and for centuries French was the language of world diplomacy.

Shouldn't Americans be relieved that this allows their President to sit further forward than if English or Italian had been used? Latin would only have bumped them two alphabet letters
