Daughters blinking eyes

Anonymous
About a month ago our 6 yr old starting doing this weird intermittent, rapid blinking thing. It would be for maybe five-ten seconds at random times. We tried allergy medicine but it didn’t help and the pediatrician didn’t have a possible reason for the blinking.

Anyone else experience this? Something is obviously going on so I think need we go to an ophthalmologist or allergist.

Can she talk to you while she's doing it? If not, I vote seizure.

Do you draw attention to it?

Take her to her doctor. Sounds like it might be a tic but also need to make sure it’s not a seizure.

Yeah she can talk while it happens. My husband took a video of it and showed it to the Dr.

Blinking is a common tic and 6 is a common age for them to appear.

Your eyes are supposed to blink a lot. Like constantly. Many times a minute. If you dont, they get dry.

and a tic would indicate what?

It can be a form of a seizure. Record her doing it and show it to her doctor.

“ Absence seizure. This is also called petit mal seizure. This seizure causes a brief changed state of consciousness and staring. Your child will likely maintain posture. His or her mouth or face may twitch or eyes may blink rapidly. The seizure usually lasts no longer than 30 seconds. When the seizure is over, your child may not recall what just occurred. He or she may go on with activities as though nothing happened. These seizures may occur several times a day. This type of seizure is sometimes mistaken for a learning or behavioral problem. Absence seizure”

But OP said her DD can talk during the blinking.

Stimming comes to mind, but since your doc didn't think anything of it, it's probably nothing. Your child likes the extra attention they are receiving. Ignore it for a few weeks and see if it goes away

Get her eyes checked by developmental/behavioral optometrist. They can figure out if there are any issues. Or a pediatric ophthalmologist.

My child recently got diagnosed with stereoblindness, i.e. inability to see in 3D vision.

Blinking is one of the symptoms but my kid did not have that symptom.

I knew a guy in college who used to randomly do a few hard, repetitive blinks like this. It was noticeable, but not particularly noteworthy, until one night he told a group of us that he had Tourette's and this was one of the symptoms.
