Engineering at a Liberal Arts College?

When do you think this makes sense? I have a highschooler who seems to be drawn to both, but they don't seem to overlap, except maybe at a couple schools, and then maybe not so well.

Somebody here must have had their child do engineering at a LAC, right?

We looked at a few including Swarthmore, Lafayette, Union, etc. I would check that they have the type of engineering you want and that the program is ABET certified. I would avoid a general major of “engineering”.

Bucknell has a strong engineering program and an even stronger alumni network. You'll find Bison in high-level positions across baby industries, invitations engineering and especially finance. They love to hire other alums and help them start lucrative careers.

My DD is an engineering major at Swarthmore. She liked the idea of a smaller school where undergrads have research opportunities and can more easily forge connections with professors.

Swarthmore, Harvey Mudd, etc are good choices.

Don't go to any of the ones that require the 3+2 programs with Dartmouth or Columbia.

PP. This should read "many industries" but autocorrect, which shouldn't exist, is always a pain, and is never helpful, thinks it's smarter than I am. (It's not. I went to Bucknell.)

OP, depending on what he likes about LACs, I would consider looking at mid size private universities that offer engineering. There are lots.

If this student might be interested in a partnership arrangement, such as with Dartmouth's 2-1-1-1 program, this would expand the LAC options available.

There aren't many small schools that offer engineering. The ones that really focus on it would be Harvey Mudd, Olin, and Cooper Union, which is an interesting school. Among the more typical SLACs, Swarthmore, Union, Lafayette. I think that's about it.

Add Rose-Hulman.

And Bucknell. Lafayette and Bucknell have roughly equal # of engineers and both have more than Swat (tiny) and Union.
