My 2016 daughter went to their tryouts today, and I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between their two top teams. I noticed on their page it says SYC Pre-GA and SYC Pre-GA South. Also, if anyone has information about the club in general and their fees, I’d really appreciate it!

Their Pre-GA team is currently one of the stronger teams in Northern Virginia, comparable in level to GFR Blue, Alexandria Red, Richmond Strikers Orange, and Arlington Spirit and Dash. The GAII team—also referred to as the Gold team—sits at the lower end of this upper-tier group.
Our daughter previously played for SYC, though our perspective on the club’s culture is somewhat dated. A couple of years ago, there was a leadership change in the SYC GA program, which was a much-needed step. At the time our daughter was there, the culture was deeply negative—some would even say toxic. Hopefully, current SYC families can weigh in on whether the culture has improved since that change or if those issues persist. |
Nothing has changed. The environment is still very toxic. Their only focus is to win. |
This is new this year. I'd like to know as well. Maybe both teams will play 9v9 in EDP? But obviously you will have one that is "better". |
Is the South team based in Lorton? |
They just got GA like 14 months ago. What are you spewing on about? |
About whether new leadership on that staff has been able to create a culture shift. I hoped that someone with recent experience would have an update regarding what was a longstanding problem. |
| Our girl was there last night as well. It was her first tryout ever and I'm curious as to how SYC placement works for all tiers. I think I remember seeing they are planing for 4 teams at the age group this year. |
| Culture is it all up to the club and its leadership. Parents play a part in building the culture too. Just saying |
Leadership there could care less about what parents think about culture and toxicity. A rats ass they couldn’t give. In fact, the more the issue is talked about or parent emails the more it reinforces they are on the right path in their view. Is it a right or wrong approach when dealing with nine, ten, eleven year olds? Who knows but that’s reality. Some people don’t mind or they mind but choose to be there anyway. That’s the type of parents that reinforce it. They win and that’s all that matters in that universe. |
My daughter has played with the South coach and liked him. He's not toxic. |
What is this south nonsense? Do they have fried chicken there too? |

OP, yes this seems to be new. But the 2016 Pre-GA South Coach and practices will be closer to Prince William and that coach is awesome.
I think they are collecting up some PWSI kids who have not been happy with the program&club down there. The 2016 Pre-GA team should have practices in the Springfield area. That coach is also very good and has had lots of good results recently. |
Lastly, I believe they should play at about the same level in EDP but at 7v7 with rosters at about 9 kids... (time will tell in the 1st season next fall if they are at the same level or not.) And they should later combine to form 1 bigger Pre-GA Team in a year or two and expand that roster to about 13 kids, but id expect that team to practice primarily in the Springfield area. |
Is JB the coach? |
