I know, I know. I'm just never the driver in our family but need to drive to Boston to pick up DD from college and spend a day to set up her next year's lease (that starts May 15). Are there any insider tips? Best days for me to drive up would be a Friday or Saturday and return after one or two nights. Good time to travel, good stops, breaks/gas? |
Once you hit New York, Hutchinson Parkway to Merritt Parkway (non-commerical traffic only).
Avoid I-95 after New York. It's not well maintained, gross & crowded. |
Forgot to say, you can shave 30 minutes off the drive by going with Merritt.
If you have time, stop by New Canaan and see the Glass House or visit Grace Farms. |
Just get on the road, set up your traffic app and drive. It isn't that far. You are driving through the most populated region of the United States. There are tons of places to get gas, buy food, etc. |
Useless post. |
thanks |
Stop by New Haven for pizza |
Not wrong, though. |
Yes, and generally I like taking the Garden State Parkway up to the Tappan Zee, then 287 to the Hutchinson Parkway. It's slightly longer than taking the GWB, but I really dislike the GWB/Cross Bronx. I'd only go GWB if there was a major traffic jam on the Tappan Zee route. |
Same here, but don’t get lost looking for Tappan Zee signs or GPS routes. It’s called the Mario Cuomo Bridge now. Waze always tries to reroute me to the GWB even if I select the Cuomo route. Learn the route ahead of time so you don’t get off course. I have learned to set my GPS to the James Gandolfini Rest Stop and it helps prevent Waze from freaking out. We almost always stop there anyway before/after crossing the bridge. |
Good tip! The patron saint of North Jersey. |
Now that's a tip! |
I did the DC Boston drive for years. I preferred to take tapanzee than to go through NY and then connect to the Merritt. |
This is exactly what we do. |
I would leave crack of dawn on Saturday morning, agree with the Merritt parkway poster, as for pit stops , I can’t think of anything remarkable, so just stop when you need to, there will be plenty of options. |
