Mark Carney, Canada's new Prime Minister

Anonymous
Anyone following the election in Canada? I'm originally Canadian and I'm relieved he's come on to the political scene. We need a competent and experienced leader with in these difficult times. Carney has a PhD in economics from Oxford and held the reigns at both the Bank of Canada and then the Bank of England in very difficult times. His main opponent is the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre. Poilievre is a career politician who has dabbled too much into the culture wars and conspiracy theories of the right (World Economic Forum, defunding "woke universities" etc.) and is a complete shill for the oil and gas industry. Thankfully it looks like with Trudeau leaving the scene, it's a brand new game. And Carney looks well positioned to win this election decisively.

I think he is extremely qualified for the position and has a level head on his shoulders., Canada needs someone like him in these times.

His qualifications sound much more impressive than the bozo running our country. If he wins, I hope he takes up the leadership mantle for North America now that the US has withdrawn from the world stage.

I read about what he and the EU (Japan as well but not sure if they were involved in the meetings that were apparently held) did with buying up Treasury bonds and then selling them off, increasing interest on the bonds and lowering the value of the dollar, which in the near term at least will add additional cost to the costs imposed by tariffs. Especially for things which are just not produced domestically at all or in the volume needed, and those that cannot be produced in the US in the volumes needed, if at all.

Trump will love it, as he actually was(is?) a governor, of the bank of England.

They made money for their countries and made life harder for their US adversary. As an American, I fail to see the problem. If our government was responsible partner to the global community, these things wouldn't be happening.

Was. He was also the governor of the Bank of Canada. Incredibly impressive credentials.

Yes, I’m American and have been following the election. Mark Carney is very impressive.

I have one question - Why is Alberta so conservative relative to the rest of Canada, even to Saskatchewan and Manitoba?

I think it’s oil. Alberta is the Texas of Canada.

Saskatchewan is probably more conservative than Alberta now. It used to have an agrarian progressive populist tradition, but that hasn't really been true for 20 years.

Manitoba is dominated by Winnipeg (60% of the population) and it's quite a progressive city with a labor-left tradition and a very large Indigenous population. Manitoba also doesn't have a "boom and bust" resource economy like its Prairie neighbors.

Calgary stands out, meanwhile, as Canada's most Conservative major city and a center of the energy industry (think of Denver in the days of Dynasty). But it's starting to change and I think the Liberals will have a breakthrough there.

Albertan here. Its about money. Specifically oil and gas. But even a conservative here is like a us democrat. It's more fiscally conservative, socially liberal here

Pierre Poilievre is the man Canada needs in charge right now.

Carney is awesome. That guy is the bomb rockstar.

I hope for Canada, he locks it in. Regardless of party affiliation, a country needs someone who understands economics. All you have to do is observe the US and see what happens otherwise!!
