train from DC to Morristown

Anonymous
I am planning a trip to Morristown NJ and plan to take Amtrak. It looks like there is no easy transfer from Amtrak to NJ Transit (Morristown line) in Newark. (???)

Do I really have to go into Penn Station (NYC) to get on NJ Transit to Morristown? Are there better alternatives?

You used to be able to transfer in Newark? Are you sure you can’t because that is a multi-line station for NJ Transit. Metropark also probably has trains to Morristown.

I think you are right there is no easy way to switch. I think you could take a bus from the amtrak stations to the Newark Broad st station if you wanted

Two options:

1. Amtrak to Newark, then two buses to Morristown.
2. Amtrak to Penn station, then nj transit to Morristown.

#2 faster

There is a train that runs between Penn and broad stations now

Another option beyond buses and going to Penn Station NY would be to take NJ Transit from Penn Station Newark and then switch to the Morristown line at the Secaucus Junction. Personally, that's what I would do. It's a pretty smooth transfer and the station is less chaotic than Penn Station NY.

Yes, Newark light rail. Might be a bit cumbersome with a heavy suitcase though.

This. There are two stations in Newark, one with Amtrak and the other on the Morristown line. You can use light rail or bus Uber between them, or you could just Uber to Morristown.

I agree with this. Exit Amtrak in Newark. Take NJ Transit one stop north to Secaucus Junction and transfer there to Morristown. Don’t go all the way into NY.

This will generally work, but depends on timing. There are some times of the day when there are 40 minute gaps between NJ Transit trains on that route. If you arrived at Newark Penn on Amtrak at 4:25 PM on Monday, the next train to Secaucus Junction doesn't arrive until 5:05. So definitely check schedules, NJ Transit live departures, etc.

It is 30 min from metropark to Morristown- get off Amtrak at Metropark and uber to Morristown. The cost of the uber is offset by not having to buy a second train ticket from penn station (newark or nyc) to morristown, and more importantly to me would be that you’d save so much time.

Thanks for all the great advice! I bought the Amtrak ticket (DC to Newark Penn St) and will keep tabs on live NJ Transit status. Uber to Morristown is my backup plan.
