possible short luteal phase - recommend OB/GYN to confirm

Anonymous
I'm 40 years old, in 2nd month of TTC, and for my first month had a short-ish LP of 10 days (possibly 9 days... it depends on whether my red spotting in the evening of CD 10 should actually be counted as the first day of the next cycle).

If I don't get pregnant this cycle and my LP still looks short, I would like to consult an OB/GYN to see if I can get a prescription for Prometrium. Do you have an OB/GYN you'd recommend, or would you suggest I see an RE right away? I see from reading older posts that REs typically like to see people after they've been trying for 6 months if they're advanced maternal age. I would however like to see someone right away to see if something as simple as a progesterone supplement would help me get PG faster. I realize I'm jumping the gun a little, but as I said, I am 40 and I'd rather not wait long to start looking into potential problems.

A LP of 10 days is okay - 9 may not be. After a MC I had a LP of 8 days and went to an RE. He was against simply supplementing with Prometrium because he said a short LP may be indicative of other problems. It's important to determine why you have a short LP. An RE can do this. But with only 1 month of keeping track you might not have a problem at all. I would give it a couple more cycles and then make an appt with an RE if your LP is still short.

I agree with the PP. Don't mess around with an Ob/Gyn, go straight to an RE. This doesn't mean you will have to do any type of fertility treatment, but they will be able to zero in on the issue immediately.

I highly recommend Dr. Sacks at Columbia Fertility.
