We live in CA (south of San Francisco) and are traveling to Tahoe for a soccer tournament in June. My kids are 12 (soccer player) and 8.
Ideally, the team would like to stay together. A dad randomly picked a hotel listed on the tournament site, so a few families booked, but the listing was wrong and there’s no pool and the reviews look horrible. There’s another property with a pool by the same owners / same cost ($209/ night). The reviews are also horrible (dirty, loud, thin walls etc). That said, for the pool, I’m at least going to try to get people to switch there. Before the dad found this hotel, I’d wanted to have *something* and had booked a hotel that sounds great but is $440 / night plus $30 / night resort fee. I have a room with two queen beds. I’m not sure, but I think $470 / night is more than I’ve ever spent on a room. It’s definitely pricey! I’m not sure I could get people to switch there. I called to see if they offer a group discount - it’s a minimum of 10 rooms and they only have king bed / sofa bed combos left at the group rate. At the group rate these rooms would be $300 / night but I’d probably have to reach out to other teams from our town to get enough people and I’d have to give up the queen-queen arrangement. They also require a contract with a specific number of rooms and if your group doesn’t occupy at least 80% of the estimate someone has to have a credit card on file and pay the difference. This is further complicated because one family is bringing a player with them and needs a five person room or rooms and we’d love to bring a player with us (to get up to 5) who can’t otherwise attend. I’ve floated the idea is just getting an extra room (four to a room and then a room with two people). From that standpoint the cheaper hotel makes some sense. I’ve never been to Tahoe and was looking forward to it - it’s the weekend school gets out and right after a big push at work - but I hate not getting sleep and wonder if I should just stay behind with the 8 year old if the team sticks with the hotel that gets such awful reviews (average rating less than 2 stars on various sites). But the other feels like a LOT of money. |
Personally, I would book the nice hotel as a mini vacay and would not involve others. |
$300 is way too much to expect people to pay. |
You sound like a really anxious person. The team goes to the hotel the manager picks. Period. Many tournaments are stay to play. If you want something different you do it on your own. You do no screw over the manager and the team by taking a group of other parents with you. |
Unless you're from Los Altos Hills or something people are not going to pay $400 a night for a hotel to watch their kid play soccer. $200 is about the going rate IME.

Just stay at the hotel you want to stay at, and let others stay wherever they decide. Since your whole family is traveling, I don't see a huge benefit to staying at the same hotel unless everything is really far apart. |
I personally can't stand the horrible hotels for kid sports tournaments so I send DH up with the kid. The one time I wanted to go, in Florida, kid and dad stayed with the team and I booked a second, much nicer hotel nearby and after the tournament was done the soccer kid and DH moved to our hotel. |
For a decent hotel in Tahoe? Unfortunately location and quality of dictate prices of rooms, not peoples budgets. You have to expect this with travel sports. |
For a vacation sure but not. for a kids soccer tournament. |
