Hey, what happened to this concept? It used to be their entire identity. Government should be small. It should have very little effect and influence on our daily lives. But now, republicans want the federal government to be as big and overreaching as possible. They cannot get enough of federal government. Nothing seems to be off limits. Things that should not be political in any way are at the forefront of everything. Just to name a few…
Abortion Pronouns Gender-affirming care Gay marriage DEI at private companies Social studies curriculum Religion Books These are all things that should simply be our own choices or up to the states. We don’t have to agree on all of these. But forcing others, through federal laws and policy, to follow your beliefs and values is not small government. It’s quite the opposite. The whole “woke” agenda is basically just advocating for small government so that people can make their own choices. There are other and more appropriate ways to advocate for your beliefs. All of the things I listed above…you are free to speak out for/against. But there are many other ways to do so that are more appropriate and less lazy… Counsel pregnant teens through your church. Educate them on their non-abortion options. Recruit new Christians by inviting your neighbors to your church’s ice cream social, for starters. If your local library has drag queen story hour and you don’t like that, stop going there. Write them a letter or call to express your views. Don’t go to book stores that carry books that offend you, and let them know what/why you are boycotting. Open your kid’s backpack and read their teacher’s newsletter to find out what is actually being taught. Have a conversation with your kid. If you have questions about what was taught, set up a meeting with the teacher to discuss. I could do a whole other thread on rights republicans are taking away (free speech). I would love to hear from some republicans. Why should any of these things be political? How do you justify it? As a party, have you officially changed your stance on small government? What’s going on here? |
There is zero ideological consistency. Only whatever Trump declares. That’s the measure. Nothing else matters to the cult. |
I see plenty of Democrats criticize Biden. I never see MAGAs criticize Trump. Literally incapable. I do see that moderates who voted for Trump already regret their decision. |
Yeah, that’s another thing. They are supposed to be all about the blue collar workers. So their leader is the guys who literally lives in a gold-plated tower and was born with a silver spoon in his mouth? I couldn’t find any evidence of him associating with the poor or middle class in any way before politics. |
He still doesn’t associate with the lower classes today. He just uses them as tools. |
This isn't a thing anymore. I say that as a Republican myself. It's all about the culture wars and using government power to force compliance. |
The Republicans are for small government. They are firing food inspectors, drug inspectors and support staff, cruise ship inspectors, firefighters, park rangers, scientists at the CDC and NOAA, cyber security people in multiple agencies. Etc. |
Add eliminating local control over zoning to the list. Look at Florida and now north Carolina with proposed HB 765. |
Of course Dems criticize Biden NOW. But they promoted him when he was senile, campaigning from his basement in 2020, “running the country,” and winning a fake primary. Moderate Trump voters may not love all his actions, but most of them are not yearning for “leadership” from the likes of Biden and Harris. Democrats have not changed anything nor apologized for anything. not school closures, not forced injections, not millions of illegals, not the Weekend at Bernie’s presidency. They’ll be out of power for quite a while. |
As a republican, how do you feel about that? Are you good with it, or do you wish your party would go back to their small government stance? |
The above has been what they truly believed in for a very long time. Small government and fiscal responsibility was the schtick they used to get folks to vote for them. However as social media and 24/7 News cycles became more prevalent it got harder and harder to hide their misdeeds, and so the light shone brighter in their hypocrisy. Then Obama was elected and it became very clear that they didn’t care about the people nearly as much as they claimed. |
Exactly. Libertarian except for all the christian nationalist stuff. The GOP has been a sham since at least the 1980's. |
Nah, we could give you endless examples of democrats holding our own accountable (John Edwards, Al Franken). Once the public saw Biden’s decline on the debate stage, the calls for him to drop out or for the party to do something were relentless. I am a huge fan of Biden and appreciate his decades of service. But when I saw him on the debate stage, I said he needs to go. I was disappointed that he ran for a second term. Contrast that with Trump standing on the debate stage weeks later saying “They’re eating the dogs! They’re eating the cats!” and “They are aborting babies after they’re born!” You guys said nothing. You cheered him on. His debate was FAR worse than Biden’s by any measure. Most of what you said can be attributed to your lack of understanding of a GLOBAL pandemic l. It has been 5 years. If you haven’t learned about the science and GLOBAL response by now, you are incapable so I won’t waste my time. |
No party comes particularly close to representing me these days. The Republican party has picked up a lot of voters who are pushing it further away. |
Obama did seem to be the catalyst, sadly. I remember the night he was elected. My friend, who campaigned for him nonstop and is the most educated person I know on politics and government, said, “I sure hope he makes it worthwhile. The backlash from republicans for electing a black man will go on for decades.” She was mot wrong. |
