Wisconsin- where to eat?

Anonymous
We are visiting the University of Wisconsin and wondering where we should eat in Madison for dinner and lunch. What are your favorites? Thanks!

What type of food do you like? There is just about any cuisine from around the world. My personal favorite is Ahan (https://ahanmadison.com/) which is off Capital Square on the side away from campus. Very close to there is also Sardine, which is more of an upscale Bistro but with great views of Lake Monona, but on State Street, there are a ton of options that are going to range from decent quick food to really good and interesting. One of the older places around is Porta Bella, an Italian place just off State Street.

Of course, everyone has to have a brat from State Street Brats and ice Cream on the Union Terrace.

Oh, not Porta Bella, not unless you want what is essentially a frozen TV dinner.

Madison punches way above its weight for restaurants. Sardine is incredible. You might get more info on the Madison subreddit.

I only mentioned Porta Bella because it has been there a long time. The others are actually really great restaurants, but they are a little off campus.

If you want a nice location, go to state street or eat at memorial union or union south.

Old Fashioned (iconic)
Great Dane
State Street Brats (college dive)
Ice cream/beer/brats on the Union Terrace at UW
Weary Traveler (West of the Andes sandwich)
Tex Tubbs (tacos)
Colectivo (coffee)
Old Sugar Distillery (cocktails; order the honey cap)

Used to live there, and these are the places we go to every year when we go back.

If you've never been to a Culvers, you've gotta try it! Butter burger and the custard
