Looking for a coach or program for executive function
DD is heading to high school next year. She has dyslexia/dysgraphia/dyscalculia/ADHD and significant EF issues. She hasn’t been in public but will be going to MCPS in the fall. I’m not sure if EF folks work with your child in person or remotely and how often they work with them but I’d like to get something started this summer so we can have a plan before school starts. Thanks! |

You can check out the bios here:
https://thechesapeakecenter.com/ My daughter has had a EF coach here for a few years. Fit was very important. Not cheap but no complaints. She sees him remotely (college junior now) but they have in-person too. Good luck! |

I'm an EF coach. I'd recommend looking for someone who can work in person with your child. It tends to be more effective than virtual. I'd also look for meetings twice per week, given that you note your child has significant EF challenges. Additionally, EF coaching is typically most effective when the student has something specific to work on in the sessions. This can make summer sessions more challenging, if your EF concerns are large school based. The coach and student can discuss "study strategies" or "how to organize an essay," but if the student can't apply it right away, they don't internalize it the same way.
So, if your concerns are mostly school based, I'd look to start sessions towards the end of the summer, so the coach and student can begin to build a relationship and then quickly have concrete issues to engage. |
| I would ask your child's school counselor, and all your friends for suggestions (you might be surprised which friends already have EF coaches). |
| My kid with adhd does horrible with anything online. I know they’re all different but if I was paying for an EF coach I’d want it in person. |
Are you in DC? I’m trying to find and in person EF coach for my rising 7th grader. . |

I have tried a couple of different services online for my twins and alas we didn’t do well with virtual - maybe too much negative history with virtual covid “school.”
One twin is heading to De Mantha where I pray he is going to get the services he needs. One twin is going to Duke Ellington where, too, I think there are a LOT of kids suffering from EF problems. I have worsening ADD (maybe I can blame it on my increased use of screen for everything?) and I cannot seem to get my raising freshman to use ANY of the tools that I use to function. I would LOVE an in person coach to talk about 1.HOW TO USE A CALENDAR! 2. How to take notes. 3. The benefits of a “place for everything and everything in its place.” |

We have used Alex Shumann for DD in 10th grade. She is great and has helped DD through a variety of EF issues and even emotional regulation strategies. She was referred by DD’s school and I highly recommend her.
