Will it be too cold in June in Maine to do water based activities like kayaking and paddle boarding? |
When in June?
Where in Maine? Lake? Ocean? |
Define "cold"?
I was in Bar Harbor all June last year and some people kayaked. Didn't see any paddle boarders. Highs ranged from the 50s to the lo-70s. Acadia will probably have some limited access since they aren't currently preparing to repair the winter damage. |
Probably. June in Maine is like DC in April. Sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's like it is today. Either way the ocean will be very cold. If watersports are a must for you, I'd go July-September. |
NP. What does this mean? They had winter damage and don’t plan to repair it? Or June is too early? |
Every winter they get damaged trails. That's what the spring clean up is for. But all those contracts have been canceled so the repair work that would normally be done starting now isn't going to be done. Source: My Bar Harbor next door neighbor who is a contractor for the NPS and isn't going back to work for them this year. And no new contracts were issued. How ba dis it? Some trails by th eocean will probably be closed. Others will be impassable because trees and limbs have fallen over the winter. Who knows right now. |
+1 And even then you might appreciate having a wetsuit in the ocean. |
Some of the trail repair is being done, fwiw. No idea what percentage, though. |
I am sure that's true. But I don't know what kind of winter is was or how much damage was done. I would go. THe park will still have plenty of things accessible. I would just go with a cautionary attitude that some things might no be available. |
I've worn sweatshirts on July 4th nights, Down East. |
Maine water is always blue fingers and toes cold, my kids love Acadia and still get in. Ogunquit is warmer but not by much. |
Yes too cold.
Even in Aug lakes are pretty cold and by then it has had all summer to warm up. |
OP here. Thanks for the replies. First half of June is the only time I can get my college aged kids to travel with us. We love Maine but have only been in August (we’ve typically gone to mid coast areas). My kids love paddle boarding and kayaking, and as a family we love hiking and biking, and great fresh seafood. I love Maine weather in August, especially since it is so hot in DC then.
Maybe I’ll look into the Smoky Mountains (assuming there are nearby lakes). Any suggestions for other Maine type vacation spots but with warmer weather in June? |
They could always just wear wet suits and go wherever in Maine. |
Yes. It will be super cold. And the air temperature might still be in the 60s.
In July and August it is *possible* that the ocean gets into the high 60s to low 70s. But in general the ocean water is freezing compared to beaches around the DMV. Maine is not dependably "summer like" until late June/early July. It is a short season. |
