Infertility Support and Discussion
|
I'm recently pregnant from an IVF cycle, and saw a heartbeat (106) at first 6 week ultrasound. Why do I get another at 8 weeks? Is it to confirm it's still there? I want/need that confirmation but on the other hand am worried about unnecessary tests... is an 8 week ultrasound standard for natural pregnancies?
As I've moved out of the area I've been transferred to an OB. |

My first pregnancy was natural. The first u/s was at 9 weeks.
This pregnancy is IVF. I had the first u/s at 6 weeks with the RE (saw a heartbeat) and have another one scheduled for 8 weeks. This one will be with the OB. |

I wish I was offered that. Two mcs and twice growth stopped a couple days after 6w.
Second time we had seen a hb. I am sure you are fine though, gl! |

OP here,
I'm sorry to hear about your losses, PP, which I can emphathize with. I know how heartbreaking it is. Does this mean the 8 week is for reassurance (or diagnosis that the pregnancy has stopped being viable)? |

I'm not sure why you are worried about having another sonogram. The technology is extremely safe. Women who are high-risk have frequent sonograms throughout their pregnancies, and this has been the case for years.
Anyway, most OBs want a dating sonogram at around 8 weeks. They don't rely on the one from your RE. I had one with my RE at 6w5d and was released to the OB, and they had me come in at 8w5d for another one so they could take their own measurements. |

With my first pg I didnt get an us until 20 weeks Second one I went in for an us bc of spotting at 11 w and there was no hb Third I had an u/s with RE at 6w saw hb and he released to ob. 4 days later I spotted so another u/s and no hb So I am not sure why the secod one for you at 8w but I would def take it |
The 8 wk one is because that's standard with most OBs for all pregnancies. They don't care if the RE did one for you earlier. They like to take their own around 8wks, the same way they do for patients who were not seeing an RE and are coming in for their first prenatal visit at 8 wks. I've had spontaneous/unassisted pregnancies and went in at ~8wks to the OB for a sono at my first visit. In my current pregnancy, I was seeing an RE (though, oddly, this pg was also spontaneous as I was taking a break and waiting to start an IVF cycle and got pregnant on my own), and even though the RE did a sono for me at 6.5 wks, the OB did one as well at 8wks. If you do first trimester screening, you will have an ultrasound around 13 wks, and then the big anatomy scan at 20 wks. Those are the standard ones. You could have more if indicated by things that are going on with the pregnancy, and some OBs will do some toward the very end to try to gauge baby's weight (though the 3rd tri. weight ones are not very accurate). |
| if you get an u/s to be sure the baby is ok - take it!!! trust me - time between that one and the 13 week is very, very long. The timing is normal |
